Why we love burdock root
Earthy and gently sweet
Burdock brews a soft, rooty cup with a hint of artichoke sweetness, mellow enough to balance bitter herbs.
Old-fashioned company
Burdock and dandelion are an old British pairing, and the two still make a natural team in the pot.
Naturally caffeine-free
There's no caffeine in burdock root, so it suits a slow afternoon or a quiet evening cup.
Good to know
Flags: Daisy family.
Contains daisy-family flowers — avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums or marigolds.
Burdock grows wild across Europe and northern Asia, its hooked burrs clinging to every passing sleeve; one such burr inspired the invention of Velcro in the 1940s. In Japan the long root, gobō, is a much-loved vegetable, and in Britain dandelion and burdock, said to date back to the Middle Ages, is still a fizzy favourite.
