Cloves
Syzygium aromaticum
Dried flower buds shaped like tiny nails, rust-brown with round, paler heads. Intensely aromatic, with a sweet, numbing heat, a few cloves give chai and mulled blends their deep, festive warmth.
Blend with cloves →The benefits
Why we love cloves
Deep, festive warmth
Cloves bring the sweet, smouldering spice of mulled wine and Christmas baking to chai and winter blends.
The power of a few
Cloves naturally contain plenty of eugenol, the fragrant oil behind their intensity, so two or three buds are enough for a pot.
Naturally caffeine-free
Cloves contain no caffeine, making them a warming addition to rooibos and herbal blends.
Good to know
No special cautions for most people in normal tea amounts.
Cloves are the unopened flower buds of an evergreen tree from the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, the original Spice Islands. Courtiers of China's Han dynasty are said to have held cloves in their mouths to sweeten their breath before addressing the emperor, and the spice later drew European fleets halfway around the world. The name comes from the Latin clavus, a nail.
